Bhav Gunjan Youth Festival 2025

Bhav Gunjan Youth Festival 2025: A Reflection on the Festival of Youthfulness

The Bhav Gunjan Youth Festival 2025 organized by MK Bhavnagar University was not only a cultural event but also a vibrant celebration of creativity, performance, and youthful enthusiasm. Youth festivals are often described as “युवानी का महोत्सव”—a festival of youthfulness—and this event truly reflected that spirit. By observing different artistic and dramatic performances, students experienced how literature, theatre, and fine arts come together to express social realities, emotions, and imagination.

Kala-Yatra and its Themes

One of the most visually impressive parts of the festival was the Kala-Yatra, where various colleges presented creative tableaux. These tableaux represented several important social and cultural themes such as environmental awareness, women’s empowerment, national unity, rural life, and the impact of technology on modern society.

The Kala-Yatra showed how visual storytelling can communicate meaningful messages without long explanations. Through costumes, music, symbolic props, and coordinated movements, students effectively highlighted issues that are relevant to contemporary society.

Dramatic Events and Major Themes

Among all the activities, dramatic events like One Act Play (एकांकी), Skit (लघु नाटक), Mime (मूक अभिनय), and Mono-acting (एक पात्रीय अभिनय) were the most engaging.

The One Act Plays dealt with themes such as social injustice, family relationships, generational conflicts, and mental health awareness. These performances often reflected the challenges faced by modern youth.

Skits were mostly humorous and satirical. They criticized corruption, social hypocrisy, and blind imitation of modern lifestyles while entertaining the audience.

Mime performances were particularly powerful because they conveyed emotions without dialogue. Through body language and facial expressions, performers expressed themes such as loneliness in the digital age and environmental destruction.

Mono-acting showcased the talent of individual performers who portrayed intense emotional situations alone on stage. These performances required great confidence, creativity, and acting ability.

Application of Dramatic Literary Theories

The dramatic performances could also be understood using dramatic theories proposed by thinkers such as Aristotle, Ben Jonson, John Dryden, Martin Esslin, and Irving Wardle.

Some One Act Plays followed the structure of Aristotelian tragedy, where the protagonist faces a serious conflict that leads to an emotional climax and creates a feeling of catharsis in the audience.

Certain skits resembled Ben Jonson’s Comedy of Humours, where exaggerated character traits created humour and satire.

A few performances also reflected ideas related to the Theatre of the Absurd, discussed by Martin Esslin, portraying confusion and existential uncertainty in modern life.

Elements similar to Comedy of Menace, a term associated with Irving Wardle, were also visible in some plays where humour and tension existed together.

Categories of Dramatic Performances

The dramatic events could be categorized into different dramatic styles:

Sentimental comedy – focusing on emotions and moral lessons

Anti-sentimental comedy – using irony and satire instead of emotional exaggeration

Comedy of manners – criticizing social behaviour and hypocrisy

Modern tragicomedy – mixing serious themes with humour

Bollywood-style theatre – dramatic dialogues and expressive performances influenced by Indian cinema

These performances showed how modern student theatre combines classical dramatic ideas with contemporary storytelling styles.

Fine Arts Exhibition

On the final day of the festival, the Fine Arts exhibition displayed artworks created by students in events such as cartooning, painting, collage, poster making, clay modelling, and installation.

Many artworks used satire to comment on political and social issues, while others focused on aesthetic beauty or conveyed didactic messages about environmental protection, gender equality, and social awareness.

Cartoons and posters were particularly effective because they used humour and symbolism to present serious issues in a creative way.

My Experience as a Volunteer

Apart from observing the events, I also had the opportunity to be a volunteer in the Youth Festival. Being a volunteer gave me a completely different perspective of the festival.

As a volunteer, I helped in managing the event, guiding participants, and ensuring that programs ran smoothly. This responsibility taught me teamwork, coordination, and time management. It was also exciting to interact with students from different colleges and see their enthusiasm and dedication.

Volunteering allowed me to experience the festival not only as a spectator but also as an active contributor to its success. It made the experience more meaningful and memorable.

Overall Experience

The Youth Festival created a lively and energetic atmosphere filled with creativity and enthusiasm. Watching various performances and artistic expressions was inspiring and enjoyable.

The festival reminded us that art and literature are not limited to academic study—they come alive through performance, creativity, and shared experiences.

Conclusion

The Bhav Gunjan Youth Festival truly celebrated the spirit of youth. It provided a platform for students to showcase their talents, express social ideas, and explore different forms of art and theatre.

Being both an observer and a volunteer made this experience even more enriching. The festival was not only entertaining but also intellectually stimulating, leaving a lasting impression of creativity, collaboration, and youthful energy.
